  • Identifying structures and processes to avoid de-motivation
  • Identifying volunteers’ motivations
  • Using coaching techniques to maintain engagement

With Ruth Hodgson

Managing highly skilled volunteers

We are often used to managing people who have a similar skills set to us. But what happens when we have to manage volunteers that have technical skills that we don’t possess? The workshop will cover:

  • Designing roles for people with technical skills
  • Engaging and managing highly skilled people in our organisations
  • Designing time limited roles
  • Managing volunteers remotely

With Alan Taylor from SkillShare West Sussex, Kate Scales from VCACD and Chichester based company Nature’s Way

Designing & marketing your volunteer opportunities effectively

Designing, describing and marketing your volunteer roles effectively is key to ensuring that you get the volunteers you need to deliver an effective service. The workshop will cover:

  • Developing volunteering roles around specific skills sets
  • Identifying what potential volunteers will get from working with you
  • Presenting your volunteer roles effectively
  • How to market the volunteer roles you have developed

With Cath Barry from Worthing Volunteer Centre

Measuring the impact of your volunteers

Demonstrating to a range of stakeholders the impact of your volunteering programme can be crucial in terms of getting buy-in. The workshop will cover:

  • Why attempting to measure impact is important
  • Different models of measuring impact in brief
  • Where to find resources to help you in the future

With Victoria Dickinson

Supporting volunteers with mental health needs

One in four of us have mental ill health at some point in our lives. Being aware of mental health so that people are able to continue to volunteer is a fundamental equality issue; and should be a positive experience for both individual and organisation. The workshop will cover:

  • A brief insight into the experience of living with mental illness
  • Developing a formal process of support for people
  • What additional informal support structures you can but in place to enable people to participate effectively

With Aine Walsh from Grassroots training

Engaging ex-offenders in volunteering

There are a lot of myths around when you should or shouldn’t involve ex-offenders as volunteers. The workshop will cover:

  • Why you might want to consider working with ex-offenders
  • CRB and enhanced CRB checks
  • Types of offences
  • Spent convictions
  • Making decisions about working with ex-offenders

With Andrew Breary

Handling difficult volunteer situations

There are many reasons why involving volunteers can lead to difficult situations. This workshop will explore how best to deal with situations that in spite of the systems you have in place, continue to cause conflict. The workshop will cover:

  • Identify difficult behaviours
  • Own your own difficult behaviour; recognise triggers and responses so that you can avoid fuelling situations
  • Avoid getting into a blame culture
  • Find ways through difficult situations with volunteers

With Angie Konrad

Working with Young Volunteers

With increasing numbers of young people looking to volunteering to develop their skills and get experience, it is important that organisations are able offer young people a positive experience of the workplace and that organisations are able to make the most of the resources that are on offer to them. The workshop will cover:

  • The benefits of recruiting young volunteers
  • How to appeal to young people
  • What to think about before recruiting young people
  • Support systems you would need to put in place
  • Young people’s volunteering schemes

With Outset and WSCVYS

You will also have the opportunity to reflect on the volunteering environment more generally and join in a lively debate.

Supporting Volunteers Day is a West Sussex Volunteer Centres and Volunteering Hub event. It is supported by the West Sussex CVS Training Group and administered by the Working Together Project.
